Jakarah Lopez-Moore of Rochester, New York, was reported missing on August 29, two days after she was last seen, the Democrat & Chronicle reports. Nearly two months later, the 16-year-old’s body was found in the woods of Rochester, New York, according to the Democrat & Chronicle, 13 WHAM and Rochester First. Investigators say her body was decomposing for more than a month, Rochester First reports. Capt. Frank Umbrino of the Rochester Police Department said officers responded Saturday to a location behind the recycling facility in the area after witnesses who were fishing discovered the body. The body was identified as that of Lopez-Moore, according to reports from the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office, Democrat & Chronicle reports. Her death has been ruled a homicide, according to the media, and her cause of death has not yet been announced. Umbrino said Lopez-Mooren voluntarily left her home in the early hours of Aug. 27, but her lack of social media activity soon raised concerns, according to Rochester First.

On Tuesday, Lopez-Moore’s mother shared a tribute on social media. “You were always too big for this earth! That’s why God wanted you to come back! she wrote in a Facebook post. “I just wish I could spend a little more time with you. I wish I could have hugged you one more time.

“I wish I could have told you that I love you one more time.” “Forever my Jakarah Mahree!” she continued in the post, accompanied by a baby photo of Lopez-Moore. “I will see you again someday and when I do I will never let you go.” In another Facebook post, a woman named Kita Herring wrote about having previously worked with López-Moore. “Maybe you trusted me because (sic) I know what it feels like to have no one/I had to take care of myself from a young age, like you. Maybe because (sic) we were both a little fucked up in the head, so that’s why I was able to contact (sic) you,” Herring wrote on Monday. “Never forget you.” She added that “there is something about foster care that brings people together,” but it was not immediately clear if Lopez-Moore was in foster care at any point. PEOPLE have contacted the victim’s mother. “Even if you didn’t believe it, Jakarah, you were loved,” Herring’s post read. The death remains under investigation, according to media. The Rochester Police Department did not respond to multiple requests for information when contacted by PEOPLE on Tuesday.
