Seven-year-old Jack Rooke died today after being hit by a black BMW X4 on Longfield Avenue, in the village of Golcar, West Yorkshire, at 6 pm yesterday.
The young man was taken to hospital with serious injuries, but was pronounced dead shortly after. Heartbroken friends and family laid flowers and toy cars at the crash site. The driver of the BMW, a man in his 30s, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. The suspect remains in custody as officers continue to investigate the incident, West Yorkshire Police said. Officers continue to support Jack’s family during this “terrible time” and ask that his privacy be respected. Residents reported that Jack had been trapped under the BMW and said several police and fire crews responded to the scene. A neighbor said: ‘The first I knew was when the fire truck showed up. It’s absolutely shocking that he was crazy about cars. “I often saw him playing in the street. I couldn’t believe it when I saw him having CPR on the side of the road. He was a lovely boy.

Jack, who lived just 150 meters from the scene of the tragedy, lost consciousness after being knocked down on a quiet residential street yesterday afternoon. He was taken by air ambulance to hospital, but died shortly afterwards despite desperate attempts to save his life. Air ambulance medics headed to the Golcar area of Huddersfield at around 6pm. He was pronounced dead a short time later. Flowers, toys, notes, a teddy bear and children’s drawings by his friends have now been left on the sidewalk, under a garden hedge, in an improvised monument in memory of the young man.A heartbreaking note read: ‘He is gone from our sight, but never from our hearts. Just a kid playing with friends, too young to leave his family and friends. ‘I thought it was right to leave you some cars. I know they were your favorites. We will do everything we can to support his family. RIP Jack.’ Police are now appealing for witnesses to the crash and have urged anyone with information to contact them.
