Izabella Nash, a “friendly and happy” Queensland fireman who died while combating a warehouse fire has been praised for her compassion.
The Queensland Fire and Emergency Services community is in shock following Izabella Nash’s death in hospital tonight. She was always the first to step in and guide new firefighters, whether on or off the job,” said QFES Acting Commissioner Mike Wassing this morning. Nash was one of two firemen injured while battling a fire at Slacks Creek, south of Brisbane, early yesterday morning. Her coworkers remember her as a friendly, upbeat crew member,” Wassing added. Nash’s partner is a firefighter as well. The service is assisting her family in arranging a funeral.

Wassing stated that her colleagues, friends, and family are devastated and will miss her terribly. Our hearts break for them, and we will continue to be there with them and for them in the weeks and months ahead,” he said. Nash’s professionalism was exceptional, according to Assistant Commissioner for the Brisbane region John Cawcutt, and her death is sad to her colleagues. She is one of those people who would walk into a station and draw people in because of her knowledge and generosity of spirit,” he said. She was an excellent member of the firefighting crew.
” Cawcutt stated that Nash was in the military prior to joining QFES and has a family history of uniform services due to her father being a member of the police force. “She was very strong, and she was always the first person out to check over the equipment,” he explained. He went on to say that Nash was the type of person who always had a “good smile about her” and could tell as many jokes as she could take. Nash’s staff is “very broken up” because she was a close coworker and friend.

An investigation will be conducted to determine whether or not her breathing device failed. It’s thought she may have been unconscious due to a lack of oxygen on the scene. Wassing refuted these concerns, stating that there is no evidence of safety issues with the safety apparatus at this time, but that all parts of the operation will be thoroughly investigated. Nash had been a first-class fireman with the QFES since 2014.
Today is a sad day for Queensland and the fire and rescue service, according to QFES Minister Mark Ryan. “Honouring Izzy is the least we can do for the sacrifice she made on our behalf,” he said. Our state will always remember Izzy’s devotion. “A true Queenslander, a hero, and eternally ready,” Ryan stated that the government will consult with friends, relatives, and coworkers on ways to honor Nash, such as lighting up landmarks. He stated that “everything is on the table” in order to commemorate Nash. Lia Drew, the second fireman, is still in critical but stable condition in the hospital.
Drew has been transferred from the critical care unit to the burns unit for treatment of major injuries to her arms and hands, according to Wassing. We are also supporting her and her family,” he added. The inquiry into the cause of the fire is still ongoing. Wassing stated that the fire department wants to know what happened during the fire and the operation for Nash, Drew, their families, and coworkers.
