Ishaqur Rahman Sifat the victim – A 29-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a Bangladeshi student during a break-in at a Darwin residence, eliciting an outpouring of grief from the university and surrounding towns.

Md Ishaqur Sifat, 23, a master’s of engineering student at Charles Darwin University, was critically injured in the early morning attack on Wednesday. According to Northern Territory Police, a man entered the Millner residence in Darwin’s north at 4.25 a.m. and allegedly assaulted the resident before fleeing the scene. A short time later, the accused was apprehended in a vehicle, while the injured student was brought to Royal Darwin Hospital. Mr. Rahman died of a severe brain injury on Thursday.

The detained man was charged with murder, aggravated burglary, and theft on Friday. He was denied police bail and was scheduled to appear in Darwin Local Court on Monday. The alleged attack, according to Northern Territory Acting Police Commissioner Michael Murphy, was a “serious, senseless, heartbreaking act of violence,” and he expressed his profound condolences to the Bangladeshi community, especially the student’s family, who were in Darwin. ‘It’s just not the Darwin we know,’ he told Sky News on Friday. ‘I can promise the Northern Territory population that the police are doing everything we can to ensure that these senseless acts of violence stop.

Police said they will speak with university students and were in contact with the deceased man’s family in Bangladesh. Acting Assistant Commissioner Sachin Sharma said he was ‘very affected’ by the incident because he, too, was an overseas student in Australia. The impact is pretty profound. ‘I don’t think it will go away for the deceased’s family and friends,’ he said.
