Former Lostprophets singer Ian Watkins was attacked in prison while serving a 29-year sentence for child sex offences. The Mirror newspaper reports that the disgraced rock star, who is being held at HMP Wakefield, was stabbed to death.A Prison Service spokesman said police were investigating an incident that took place at the prison on Saturday.They added: “We cannot comment further while police investigate.”Watkins was jailed in December 2013 for a series of child sex crimes, including the attempted rape of a baby.Although he declined to comment specifically on the attack on Watkins, Prison Officers Association vice president Dave Todd said he was concerned for staff and inmates with the increasing number of incidents they are exposed to in prisons.

Watkins was sentenced to 29 years in prison with another six years on leave, but will be eligible for parole after serving two-thirds of his prison term.His two co-defendants, the mothers of the children he abused, were jailed for 14 and 17 years.During sentencing, Judge Royce said the case broke “new ground” and “plunged to new depths of depravity.”Watkins admitted to the attempted rape and sexual assault of a child under the age of 13, but has pleaded not guilty to rape.Judges rejected a 2014 appeal by Watkins to reduce the length of his prison term.As a rock star in his 20’s, he sold millions of albums worldwide and commanded huge arena crowds.Formed in 1997, Welsh rock band Lostprophets released five studio albums in total, including a UK number one album and two Top 10 singles.
