Ian Brunner, a University of Dayton graduate, died just hours after obtaining his diploma over the weekend. Ian Brunner, 22, was working underneath his car on campus Sunday evening when it abruptly toppled on top of him, according to NBC network WPXI and CBS affiliate WHIO-TV.
According to WHIO-TV, a caller told dispatchers that the jack holding up Brunner’s car “fell out,” leaving the recent college graduate “trapped underneath.” “He is unresponsive,” the person told WPXI. “We require rapid assistance. “Like, quick!”According to WPXI, when first responders arrived at the student housing complex on Irving Avenue about 7 p.m., they discovered a black two-door automobile on top of the victim.
The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office recognized Brunner as the victim, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the media sites. “We extend our deepest sympathy and prayers to Ian’s family, friends, faculty, staff, and our entire campus community,” the university stated in a statement, according to WKEF and WPXI.

University of Dayton alumnus fatally crushed by car same day as graduation
Brunner, originally from Pennsylvania, had walked in his own college graduation just hours before his untimely demise, according to WHIO-TV and WPXI. According to his obituary, supplied by Schellhaas and Sons Funeral Home, the Franklin Park resident earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Ian graduated from North Allegheny High School in 2019. High School before entering the University of Dayton. According to his obituary, he was involved in a variety of extracurricular activities, including skiing, cross-country running, track and field, and robotics. Brunner was also a member of the school’s Motor Sports Club, Makerspace, and Mars Rover Team, as well as the local British Transportation Museum and the YouTube channel “Things I Build.”
“We ask that the community keep this young man’s family, friends, and loved ones in their thoughts and prayers,” the University of Dayton stated in a statement released Monday. According to the Tri-City Herald, Crystal Sullivan, director of Campus Ministry, remarked during a memorial ceremony that the day “began in joyful celebration” but “ended in a tragic accident for one graduate.” According to the obituary, a mass will be celebrated for Brunner on Saturday in Sewickley, Pennsylvania.
