Honoree Fleming, 77, died from a gunshot wound to the head, and the medical examiner ruled the shooting a homicide, police said. Vermont State Police are calling on the public, businesses and hunters in areas near Vermont State University’s Castleton campus to check their security cameras and CCTV footage for clues that may drive to find the suspect. An unidentified witness reported that a suspect, described as a 5-foot-10 white man with short dark hair and wearing a gray t-shirt and a black backpack, was seen near the crime scene after gunshots were heard. , ABC News reported. The Delaware and Hudson Railroad route where Fleming’s body was found is just a mile from the Castleton campus of the university where she previously worked.
Vermont State University’s Castleton campus described Fleming as a “beloved teacher” who will be “dearly missed.” Fleming was also the wife of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, novelist, and nonfiction writer Ron Powers. Powers and Fleming had two sons, one of whom tragically died by suicide in 2005 before his 21st birthday. The writer was open about how the couple’s two children suffered from schizophrenia. Powers described the railroad trail where his wife was found dead as his “favorite” trail to walk. Powers posted online on Friday saying: ‘There is a raid across the area looking for his killer. Police believe it was random, but all possibilities remain open.’ The Castleton campus closed Friday due to the incident and a shelter-in-place order is in effect for those on campus due to the investigation.

Powers shared the ‘heartbreaking news’ with friends in a Facebook post: ‘To my friends: I have heartbreaking news. The beloved honoree was shot and killed Thursday afternoon while she was walking along her favorite trail near the university. “The killer shot her, possibly twice, in the side of her head and walked away from her. She died instantly. ‘Dean and I are… well, I don’t need to tell you. The medications in Dean’s usual regimen keep him stable and he has his best friend with him. They have a small fire pit outside. As for me, I’m still in shock. ‘There are times when I wish to God I could cry. I will do that. I will post more as more details come in. And I will write more, much more, about my beloved Honoree as much as I can. ‘Those of you who knew her know that she had a beautiful name. I have never known a nobler heart and soul than hers. She has taken with her far more than half of my heart and soul. ‘Honored. I’m sure most of you will want to write. (Do not call). The honoree was part of the Castleton family and loved by faculty, staff and students. ‘Dozens of students benefited from Dr. Fleming’s teachings and research. Before joining Castleton, he was also a faculty member at Trinity College, Middlebury College, and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
