Holly Newton, from Haltwhistle in Northumberland, was killed and a 16-year-old was injured following the incident on Friday night.

Police have identified the 15-year-old girl who tragically died, whose family is “devastated beyond words. Holly Newton, a “beautiful girl who loved to dance”, died Friday night at a Northumberland hospital after suffering “c” injuries consistent with being caused by a bladed item” in the market town of Hexham.

A 16-year-old boy was also rushed to the hospital after sustaining critical but non-life-threatening injuries. Since then, another youth, also 16, has been charged with murder, attempted murder, and possession of a dangerous weapon. He is scheduled to appear before Newcastle magistrates tomorrow.

Chief Superintendent Sam Rennison, Northumbria Police, said: “Holly still had a lot to do in life, and this tragic incident has left her family devastated beyond words. Their grief for her simply cannot be put into words, and our thoughts are with the families involved and their loved ones as we continue to support them in any way we can.

“The investigation is ongoing and I would like to thank the people in Hexham, and beyond, who have been very helpful with our investigations and have shown their support. While our investigations continue, we believe that everyone involved knows each other and there is no increased risk to the public. He added: “Officers will remain in the area for the next several days, and we encourage anyone with concerns to speak to them directly.”

Tributes

Holly was a pupil at Queen Elizabeth High School in Hexham, which paid tribute to her.

“We are shocked after the terrible events of Friday night and devastated by the loss of Holly, a truly lovely student who was calm, conscientious, helpful, and kind,” the school said. Our thoughts are with Holly’s family at this time of excruciating grief. We will come together as a school community on Monday to support each other as we grieve.”

Police were called to the Priestpopple area of Hexham shortly after 5:10 p.m. m. of Friday.
