Helen Smart, former member of the Olympic Swimming Team of Great Britain who also won silver medals in the World Championship and European Championships, has died. She was 42 years old. Smart was known as Helen Don-Duncan before getting married. Smart’s family and British Swimming announced the death of the swimmer on Monday. After his swimming career ended, he became a teacher at the primary school of the Worsley Mesnes community in Wigan. Alison Halliwell, president of governors of the school, described Smart’s death as “sudden.” “With great sadness and repentance I have to announce the sudden death of our beloved director, Mrs. Helen Smart,” he said. “Our sincere condolences are sent to Helen’s family at this very difficult time. I know that this news will be a shock and will cause great sadness to our community. “I want to assure you that the governors of the Worsley Mesnes school are working with local authority and school to ensure that our children, staff and parents receive the necessary support in the coming weeks.” Katy Sexton and Sarah Ruckwood were among those who paid tribute to Smart. “I’ve been trying to find the words to say about this, but I’m so surprised by the news that I don’t know what to say,” Sexton said through British swimming. “Helen was such a vibrant character, always happy and a great friend and roommate. She was such a dedicated athlete and had an incredible work ethic that led her life out of sport. We will miss her a lot and my greatest sympathies go to her family.”

Career

Smart competed on the back by Great Britain. He won a silver in the 1998 European Championship on the 200 meter back in Sheffield and in the 1999 World Championship in Hong Kong in the same event. He also had a bronze at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur. He participated in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and finished 15th in the back.
