Heather Richardson and Emmit Yarbrough Jr. were arrested last week after the body of a 30-year-old Indiana woman was found inside a burning building following a drug overdose.

Heather Richardson, 34, and Emmit Yarbrough Jr., 56, were just detained in connection with Deborah Leslie’s case last September. According to the Times of Northwest Indiana, they were charged with changing the scene of death and neglecting to notify police of a dead body. According to the publication, Richardson was detained in May, while Yarbrough Jr. was nabbed in March.

Surveillance video purportedly shows the two people wheeling Leslie’s limp body out of a Motel 6 in Hammond, Indiana, late on September 21. Leslie’s body was allegedly moved from the second story of the motel to the parking lot and then placed in the front passenger seat of her own Mazda automobile, according to video evidence. Arrested in Case of Ind. Overdose Victim Whose Body Was Dumped in Building that Was Set on Fire

On Sept. 23, her body was discovered in a smoldering structure about 10 miles distant in Gary, Indiana, two days after her body was spotted being relocated. Leslie’s parents and four siblings spoke up about her battle with addiction in an interview with The Chicago Tribune last year. The family stated that their daughter had been in and out of rehab ten times during her life, first for alcohol, then for opiates, and last for heroin. According to her father, David Leslie, the 30-year-old had voluntarily checked into treatment several times. “You can’t say she didn’t try,” he pointed out. “It was three steps forward, two steps back.”

Leslie had most recently been in treatment from 2018 to 2020, when she relapsed, according to her relatives, who noted that she was outgoing and effective at work throughout periods of abstinence. “It was a roller coaster,” Maggie Feist Leslie, her mother, said. Leslie’s mother told the newspaper that she usually carried overdose reversal medication in her purse, such as Narcan or Naloxone, and that she frequently used test strips to test heroin to check if it was laced with fentanyl. Last week, Leslie’s father spoke out regarding the allegations against Richardson and Yarbrough Jr., telling the New York Times that he thought they were “pretty minimal.” “To me, it just doesn’t seem to be justice enough,” he remarked. “And I’m sure I’ll feel that way forever.”
