Harold Whittemore “Buddy” Sherrill passed away peacefully this morning at his home. He was 96. The son of the company founder, O.T. (Oscar Truman) Sherrill, who founded the company in 1945: Buddy was in the business of domestic manufacturing when much of the furniture manufacturing industry migrated en masse to Asia over several decades.

Sherrill also added cushion and cotton manufacturing, solid wood frame production and an in-house shipping fleet to shorten the supply chain, according to a company statement. Sherrill Furniture still manufactures in the Catawba Valley of North Carolina.

He still came to High Point Market and stopped by the office from time to time, Buddy was no longer actively involved in the business, having handed the reins over to his son Charles several years ago, although he remained chairman of the board.

Buddy Sherrill joined the Army Air Corps aviation cadet program after graduating from Hickory High School in 1943, according to businessnc.com. He reported for training in 1945, but the war soon ended. While he initially contemplated dentistry or watch repair, he eventually joined the family business after earning a degree in business administration and retail from the University of South Carolina, the site added. In addition to his son Charles, Buddy also has a son, Whitt, and a daughter, Ruth Ann.
