Hamada Iqtiet, 6, was killed while visiting a private zoo in Gaza with his family, according to police. 6-year-old boy mauled to death by lion at private Gaza zoo
According to police spokesman Col. Ayman Al-Batniji, Hamada climbed through the fence when he was attacked by the lion, although the boy’s family disputes this. Hamada, who was with his mother and other family members, is said to have gone close to an outer fence where the lion was standing when he was attacked. The officer verified that the police chose to close the park temporarily until the inquiry was completed. According to reports, this is the first time anyone has been murdered by animals in one of the region’s few private zoos.
It sparked new calls for their closure, citing the animals’ inability to be properly cared for in the crowded and impoverished Palestinian territory. The animals are apparently held in appalling conditions and have been subjected to neglect, malnutrition, and a lack of medical attention as a result of frequent conflict between Israel and Gaza’s Hamas government. Despite the fact that animal welfare organizations have performed several animal rescues, many animals remain in the two-million-person strip. Another little child, aged 12, was mauled to death by a tiger earlier this year in Karnataka, southern India. His grandfather, a 75-year-old tribal elder, was attacked and killed in the same region just hours later, on February 13.
