Award-winning screenwriter Gregory Allen Howard reportedly died on Friday, January 27. He was 70 years old. According to his representative, Howard died in Miami, Florida, after a brief illness. The writer of ‘Remember the Titans,’ starring Denzel Washington, he was born in Norfolk, Virginia, and moved to Los Angeles in the ’90s to pursue his dream of becoming a screenwriter. Howard is survived by his sister Lynette Henley, brother Michael Henley, nieces Robyn Bacon and Valencia Kamara, nephew Robert Henley, a great-niece, two great-nephews and cousins Pierre Gatling and Patricia Cole, according to Variety. Howard is a two-time recipient of the NAACP Image Award. Howard’s representative, Jeff Sanderson, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that he died Friday after a brief illness. The details of the disease have not yet been revealed. Sanderson said Howard was 70, but another agency representing the writer would have said he was 61.
Howard garnered much praise for the script for the 2000s sports movie ‘Remember the Titans,’ which was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. This film made Howard the first African-American screenwriter to write a $100 million spec script. He later earned a story writing credit for Michael Mann’s “Ali,” the 2001 biopic of sports legend Muhammad Ali. The film, which was nominated for two Oscars, starred Will Smith, Jamie Foxx and Jon Voight.
In 2019, Howard wrote the script and produced Kasi Lemmons’ ‘Harriet’, a story he was truly passionate about. The story took more than 20 years to come to fruition after Howard studied Harriet Tubman as a history major at Princeton University. He had several projects in development, including “The Magician,” a biopic about quarterback Marlin “The Magician” Briscoe.
