Gerardo Hernandez-Rodriguez, 41, was walking along the Columbia River Highway on Saturday at 2 p.m. when he tragically lost his footing and fell down an embankment on a busy route near Multnomah Falls, roughly 30 miles east of downtown Portland, officials said. Witnesses said they saw the man walking on the trail past the Benson Bridge, about a half mile from Oregon’s highest waterfall, which stands at 620 feet, but then lost sight of him. His desperate wife called 911, although not all of his family was together in the same area at the time of his father’s fatal fall and they were not sure how he had fallen and where he had landed. Sheriff’s deputies along with US Forest Service rangers were assisted by local agencies. Hernández-Rodríguez’s body was found 45 minutes after the incident directly below where he had fallen. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said alcohol was likely a contributing factor in the fatal fall.
