Gary Young, the original drummer for American alternative rock band Pavement, has died at the age of 70. Gary Young, who left Pavement in 1992, died at age 70 on Thursday, according to the group’s frontman, Stephen Malkmus.Malkmus announced his death on social media, calling his drumming “a take and a hit record.”He said: ‘Gary Young passed away today. Gary’s pavement drums were ‘one take and one record’…he nailed it so well. rip.’

Record label Matador Records, which released the band’s 1992 debut album Slanted and Enchanted, also shared a tribute on social media. He added: “We were so lucky to meet the amazing human, drummer, producer and solo artist Gary Young. Much love today to his family, friends and bandmates of his.Young played drums in Pavement through their 1992 album Slanted and Enchanted, after which Steve West took over.He also produced two songs on Pavement’s 1999 EP Major Leagues and joined the band on several dates on their 2010 reunion tour.A joint Pavement tribute remembered Young as a ‘fearless ball of fire’, stating: ‘We all loved him and it was life changing to have such an amazing weapon to play music with.Tributes poured in from fans on social media as well, with one user saying: Deep condolences. I loved his performance.Another said: ‘I hate hearing this. The most underrated drum work I’ve ever heard. A different user added: ‘I’m really sorry for the loss of him. What a wild beauty she was!
