U.S. Rep. Mary Peltola’s husband, Eugene ‘Buzzy’ Peltola Jr., died in a plane crash in Alaska. His office confirmed that he will return to the state to be with his family. Peltola’s husband, who was the pilot, was the only one on board. The plane crashed shortly after taking off from St. Mary’s, Alaska, around 8:45 p.m. local time on Tuesday. “She was one of those people who was obnoxiously good at everything,” Peltola’s chief of staff, Anton McParland, wrote in a statement. “He had a delightful sense of humor that would light up the darkest moments. He was definitely the cook of the family. And family was the most important thing to him. He was completely dedicated to his parents, children, siblings, extended family and he simply adored Mary.’

The moderate Democrat, 50, was elected in 2022 to succeed the late Republican Rep. Don Young to represent Alaska’s general district. Eugene Peltola served as regional director of the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Alaska, overseeing offices in Fairbanks and Anchorage. He was an Alaska Native who served on local government and corporate boards and ran two businesses. He was vice mayor and councilman of Bethel, Alaska, from 2010 to 2012. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board said they are investigating the single-engine Piper PA-18 crash. Peltola received great support from the entire Congress. Alaska Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski said she was “shocked, saddened and truly beyond words” to learn of the tragedy. “It was easy to see why so many Alaskans called him friend and how his family loved him so much,” she wrote on X. “He was Mary’s number one supporter and truly her rock. My heart is in Alaska today with Mary and her children.’
