Prosecutors have charged Eric Robert Savela with a rarely-used felony accusing him of abusing a 1-year-old dog as part of an act of domestic violence against another person.
Eric Robert Savela is charged with a single count of first-degree murder/torture of a domestic animal with intent to threaten, coerce, or control the victim, as well as misdemeanor animal cruelty.
Savela pleaded not guilty to the charges when he was arraigned earlier this month. The felony is punishable by up to 10 years in prison, while the misdemeanor is punishable by up to 93 days in jail. He has since been released from the Genesee County Jail.

Accused of Abusing Puppy to inflict Domestic Violence
“There is a real crime, it is a 10-year (felony), which involves using and coercing people, keeping them almost in captivity, in a place where they have nowhere to move, because of the threats it makes against companion animals” , Genesee. County Sheriff Chris Swanson said at a press conference on Tuesday, February 21, discussing the case.
Kraig Sippell is the attorney listed on Savela’s court file. However, when contacted by phone Tuesday, Sippell’s office said the case had been turned over to another defense attorney.
The dog, a 1-year-old German Shepherd named “Pluto,” was one of three dogs living at Savela’s Mt. Morris Township home. Also at the home was Savela’s common-law partner, 37, and a seven-month-old child they share. Swanson said the eight-year relationship between Savela and his partner has been fraught with domestic violence.
In March 2022, while Savela’s partner was pregnant, he assaulted the woman, prompting her to file for a personal protection order against her. But Savela “went through it,” Swanson said. “People in domestic violence situations are often held captive, not just physically, (but) emotionally,” Swanson said.
After the PPO, Savela followed the woman to Genesee County, where the two began living together again. Then the violence shifted to animals, mainly Pluto, Swanson said. In February, Swanson said, the violence in the home became so severe that the victim set up a security camera.
Videos captured on camera were shown during Tuesday’s news conference, showing Savela beating the dog and talking about tying up its legs. Other alleged acts of violence, Swanson said, included Savela tying the dog’s legs with a belt and putting it in a closet for three hours.
The video was sent to Genesee County Animal Control earlier this year, who then contacted the sheriff’s office. Swanson said he hopes people will watch the news conference and come forward if they or someone they know is in an abusive relationship.
“I’m asking, I’m begging you, as sheriff, if this is happening at your house right now, don’t wait until it escalates, because it will escalate,” he said. “If you are a victim, you should know that you will be protected.”
