Eli Michel and Nafiun Awal, two mountain climbers are considered dead after going missing while attempting to summit a 10,300-foot peak in Alaska.

According to a National Park Service (NPS) release, Eli Michel, 34, of Columbia City, Ind., and Nafiun Awal, 32, of Seattle, Wash., began their trek to the Moose’s Tooth at Denali National Park and Preserve on May 5. According to the agency, the climbers were last heard from at 5 a.m. local time that day when checking in with a friend on an InReach satellite communication device.

The men stated at the time that they planned to “climb the West Ridge route of the Moose’s Tooth,” which the National Park Service classified as “a steep technical route” to the peak. According to the agency, mountaineering rangers discovered evidence that the climbers “were swept off their feet by a small slab avalanche” Friday evening when “high” on the West Ridge route.

According to the NPS, search coordinators assessed on Thursday that “survival is outside the window of possibility” for the missing men. The search has now been narrowed down. The hunt for Eli and Nafiun began on Sunday, the same day a “concerned” friend informed authorities that they had not returned as scheduled and had not checked in via InReach.

During an initial investigation of the area, crews discovered the duo’s “unattended” tent, as well as boot traces that led to the spot of “a recent small slab avalanche.” “Several pieces of the climber’s equipment were also sighted along the 3,200-foot fall line, including two ice axes and a climbing helmet,” the NPS reported.

According to the NPS, the climbers were only prepared for a single day in the wilderness. According to their pal, the men planned to climb the path “in a single, long push.” As a result, the men “did not take overnight gear, nor more than a day’s supply of food, water, and fuel.”” The National Park Service said an aircraft search “for signs of the two missing climbers” will continue for several months as temperatures rise.
