Authorities say Dylan Bazzell and Drew Fehr tandem went down a half pipe at the Copper Mountain Ski Resort around 8:35 p.m. m. Sunday, when they launched themselves from a large snowbank in the background and came down hard on the ice below, causing blunt-force trauma. Summit County Sheriff’s Office deputies immediately responded to the scene and attempted to resuscitate the star athletes, ages 17 and 18. But their efforts ultimately failed, and the teens were pronounced dead at the scene. The kids had apparently been sliding down the pipes after Copper Mountain Ski Resort closed their ski area for sunset, around 7:12 p.m. m. Sunday.

The Summit County Coroner’s Office is now investigating the deaths of the children. The ski resort warns its guests about the dangers of skiing and sledding, with a posting on its website stating, “Caution: Playing in the snow can be dangerous. Hazards include but are not limited to, collisions with natural or man-made objects or other people and variable natural and man-made walking and sliding surfaces, including but not limited to snow, packed snow and ice, and injury or death. can result.’ The resort also said in a statement to CBS Colorado that safety is its top priority and that “we would ask our guests to observe posted signs and warnings, and not enter trails and enclosed areas.”

Who was Dylan Bazzell and Drew Fehr?
Dylan is the son of Darin and Lynette Bazzell, and Drew is the son of Brian and Susan Fehr. Both Lynette and Susan are teachers in the Prairie Central School District in Illinois, while Darin served as the high school basketball coach. Friends and family remembered the two teenagers as all-star athletes with great attitudes. Bazzell played soccer and basketball for the school last year. He was named to The Associated Press All-State Basketball Team earlier this month after helping lead the team to a 31-3 record, an Illini Prairie Conference championship, a regional title, and a No. 1 in Class 2A.
Bazzell also competed in football for the Prairie High School Hawks, serving as a kicker, receiver, and defensive back for the team, which finished 11-1 after falling in the Class 3A quarterfinals, the Pontiac Daily Leader reports. The school went undefeated in the regular season and won an Illini Prairie Conference championship. Fehr also competed in high school football and basketball, serving as football team captain, rushing leader, scorer, and tackler. He also earned an all-state citation.

In a Facebook post, community member Jeremy Stoller said: ‘We could all only hope to impact our community the way Dylan and Drew did. Throughout your sports career and especially this past year, you have brought back the glory days of Prairie Central Football and Basketball,” he wrote.

In a statement, School Superintendent Paula Crane told the community that the district is “committed to doing everything possible to help our students and staff with the grief and recovery process.” She noted that the district partnered with Fairbury First Baptist Church to offer counseling, prayer services, and a place to grieve for students. This loss will affect everyone at our school and in our communities,” Crane said. “Students may have a hard time dealing with loss, and we encourage you to talk to your child.”
Funeral arrangements have yet to be determined.
