A few days after his radio and television stations were allegedly bombed by gunmen, Dr. Chinyere Igwe, a member of the House of Representatives, was arrested with a bundle of dollars on Ana Road, Port Harcourt, very early on Friday for the morning.

Police, while confirming Igwe’s arrest, gave the total sum of $498,100, along with a list of the people the money was intended for.

The PUNCH reports that Atlantic Television Network and Wish FM 99.5, located in the same building in Ozuoba, Obio/Akpor, Rivers State Local Government Area, were dynamite attacked and many properties destroyed.

State Police Commander Grace Iringe-Koko said Igwe was caught during a stop-and-frisk operation by officers stationed at the Independent National Election Commission office along Aba Road in Port Harcourt.

After his arrest, Iringe-Koko said the deputy inspector general of police deployed to the state for the elections, AIG Abutu Yaro, ordered a speedy questioning and prosecution of the lawmaker.

Igwe, who represents federal Constituency 2 of Port Harcourt in the Green Chamber of the National Assembly, is a strong supporter of the People’s Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

The police statement read: “Police officers from the Rivers State Command deployed to the INEC Aba Road headquarters today 2/24/2023 at approximately 0245 hours, while conducting a stop and search, arrested Hon Chinyere Igwe, a member of the House of Representatives representing Port Harcourt II Federal District. with a cash sum of $498,100 USD inside a bag in his car.

“A list for the distribution of money was also recovered. Deputy Inspector General of Police (Elections) AIG Abutu Yaro, has ordered a speedy interrogation and appearance in court.

“The Command urges all contenders and political parties to strictly comply with the provisions of the Electoral Law and other relevant laws.”

Iringe-Koko, Superintendent of Police, urged state residents and members to take advantage of the hotlines that the police make available to report suspicious movements and situations capable of causing security breaches.

She said: “Members of the public are encouraged to take advantage of available hotlines to report any observations they believe have the potential to lead to crime or a breach of law and order.”
