Donna Delbono, 42, made the choice to turn over her 16-year-old son Joshua to police after learning he had stabbed Charley Bates at a pub car park in Radstock, Somerset, last July. He will be imprisoned for 21 years. Donna, a mother of seven, described her actions as ‘the hardest choice any parent would ever have to make’ in an exclusive interview with The Mail on Sunday.
‘I was brought up to know the difference between right and wrong, and to always try to do the right thing in life, no matter how difficult it is,’ Ms. Delbono, from Frome, Somerset, added. Even though it was a difficult decision, I know I’d make it again. I couldn’t have lived with myself if I hadn’t called the cops instead. I’m devastated that Charley Bates died, and my heartfelt condolences go out to his family.’

Allegedly handed over his knife-wielding son to police
Her son, now 19, a bricklayer, was sentenced to life in prison last Thursday at Bristol Crown Court after being found guilty after a two-week trial and told he must serve at least 21 years. Ms. Delbono‘s 911 call was played in court. My son’s killed someone,’ she told the jury. It was earlier in Radstock. I just discovered out since he returned. He’s currently at my house, but I can’t let him go.’ Ms. Delbono told The Mail on Sunday that she had returned home from a night out with friends, and that Joshua had told her what had transpired.
‘Jade said he’d stabbed this child he’d never met before, then gone to bed,’ she explained. I dashed inside his room and turned on the lamp. Josh was sleeping, and I was shaking him awake, but when he awoke, he told me everything. He stated that he was terrified and didn’t know what to do. I told him there was only one thing he could do: turn himself into the cops. But he said he was too scared, so I told him I’d phone them if he didn’t. He simply nodded. So I took out my phone and dialed 999.
‘My son will have to live with this for the rest of his life,’ says the father. The court heard about a money disagreement between Charley Bates and one of Delbono’s acquaintances. A quarrel erupted, and both parties’ friends became involved. The court heard that Delbono stabbed Mr. Bates in the chest. Let me say to everyone who hears my words of the devastation that is caused by carrying blades,’ Judge William Hart said as he passed the sentence. What happened that day placed a dreadful pall over everyone.’
