Dominique Bernard, A teacher was stabbed to death at a school in northern France by a radicalized former student in what Emmanuel Macron, the French president, called a case of barbaric “Islamist terrorism.” Gérald Darmanin, France’s interior minister, said there was a link between the attack and the war in Israel. The 20-year-old suspect, identified as Mohammed Mogouchkov, is allegedly a Russian national and had been under “active” surveillance, including being “spied on” and followed by the DGSI, France’s national intelligence service. Checks were carried out on the suspect the day before the murder and he had reportedly been placed on a terrorist watch list just 11 days before the attack. The attack also comes as tensions rise in France, which has the largest Jewish and Muslim communities in Europe, after Saturday’s attack by Hamas on Israel. Macron stopped short of establishing a direct link, but said: “Terrorism strikes once again in a school and in a context that we all know.” Calling on French people to remain “united,” he said the school would reopen on Saturday because “our choice is not to give in to terror, not to let anything divide us.” France has been the target of a series of Islamist attacks over the years, the worst being a simultaneous assault by gunmen and suicide bombers on entertainment venues and cafes in Paris in November 2015. Police were called to the Arras school shortly after 11am on Friday. ‘Someone is attacking with a knife’ Sliman Hamzi, a police officer who was one of the first to arrive at the scene, said the alleged attacker shouted “Allahu Akbar.” He was alerted by another officer passing by the high school and ran inside. The attacker “was yelling ‘someone is attacking with a knife,'” he said. Hamzi said he ran to the school and saw the victim lying on the ground and the attacker being taken away. “Colleagues arrived quickly but unfortunately they could not save the victim,” he added.
“We are all in a state of shock,” said philosophy professor Martin Doussaut, who was chased by the attacker but managed to escape. One student told Le Parisien that he had received a video of the suspect entering the school. An intrusion alarm sounded and students remained in classrooms while the stabbings took place. French politicians expressed horror at the attack and a minute’s silence was held in parliament in Mr Bernard’s memory. Mougouchov arrived in France in 2008 with his parents and four siblings and unsuccessfully applied for asylum in 2021. Apparently, the authorities were unable to expel him from the country because he entered France before he was 13 years old. His younger brother was arrested outside another school but was not found to be carrying a weapon, police said. His older brother Mosvar is serving a five-year prison sentence for a plot to “attack the Elysée” with a Kalashnikov attack, according to Le Parisien. The plot was foiled after a French secret agent infiltrated the gang, according to the newspaper. Without residency papers, the entire family was due to be expelled from France in 2014. But at the last minute they were allowed to stay after anti-racism charities intervened.
