Dirk Kotze, a father of three who was struck by lightning while trying to seek cover during a golf game has died in hospital. Dirk Kotze was playing on a course in Brendale, north of Brisbane, when he was struck and other golfers rushed to his aid. He spent 19 days at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital fighting for life after suffering a strike-induced cardiac arrest. His daughter-in-law, Mel Swart, sadly revealed that Kotze died Thursday morning surrounded by his family.

Dirk Suffered from both the lightning strike and the cardiac arrest
“The trauma suffered from both the lightning strike and the subsequent cardiac arrest was too significant for his body to recover from,” he said. “His family takes comfort in knowing that he is now at peace and sustained by his great faith in God with the knowledge of his final destiny. Ms Swart said the incident was a “one in a million” event and that Mr Kotze would be remembered for his “larger than life personality”.
She thanked the doctors and nurses who tried to save Mr. Kotze and for the kind words of support the family received from the community. Mr. Kotze is survived by his wife Hannelé, his daughter Dané and his two sons Tiaan and Duan. “His faith in God, love for people and being the epitome of a ‘t-shirt in the back’ type of man defined him,” Ms. Swart said. ‘There was no one in need who didn’t put their own life on hold to help. His life has impacted many and will not soon be forgotten.’ He has set up a GoFundMe to help pay medical bills and help with his daughter’s education.
