Dev Shah, a Florida youngster, has won the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the United States for 2023.
Dev Shah, a 14-year-old student from Largo, Florida, correctly spelled “psammophile” to win the 95th national spelling bee and the $50,000 (£40,000) award. Charlotte Walsh, 14, of Arlington, Virginia, came in second, having misspelled “daviely” as “daevilick.” Psammophiles are organisms that dwell in sandy environments.

Wins Scripps National Spelling Bee with final word ‘psammophile’
According to the organizers, 11 kids advanced to the finals after 11 million participants entered spelling bees. “It’s surreal… my legs are still shaking,” Dev remarked as he accepted the prize on stage with his family by his side. His mother described herself as “very proud” of him. He previously competed in the competition in 2019 and 2021, finishing tied 51st and 76th.
He accurately spelled words like bathypitotmeter, schistorrhachis, and rommack on his way to the final. He also accurately answered a question, stating that a magician would almost certainly engage in legerdemain. On her way to the finals in National Harbor, Maryland, Charlotte correctly spelled words like akuammine, sorge, and collembolous. The national spelling bee first took place in 1925.
