Mother, son and daughter were the only people home as the stepfather, a truck driver, was in north Georgia at the time, police said. The Florida Department of Children and Families briefly took custody of the baby, but her maternal grandmother arrived and cared for her until her father could return, Rodriguez said. In all, there is currently no indication as to why Rosa allegedly murdered her mother. He did not explain why he killed her, police said. The murder “left everyone stunned,” Rodríguez said. He called it a “great tragedy,” leaving Garcia’s mother without a daughter and Rosa’s biological father essentially without a son. The lieutenant described Rosa as an eighth grade student and an honor roll student at iMater Charter Middle and High School. Friends and family described him as a “good kid” and an outstanding student. The teenager had no history of mental health problems; Neither did his family. There were no fights and he got along well with both his stepfather and his half-sister, Rodriguez said.
