A Minneapolis, Minnesota father saved his children after they were kidnapped by a suspect during a carjacking incident on Wednesday, November 30. Derek Gotchie, the brave father of four, reportedly used a stolen vehicle that the suspect abandoned, according to the Minneapolis Police Department. . According to Minneapolis police, Derek, a Burnsville resident, drove a car the suspect left behind a car later discovered to be stolen to find his own car, which still had his four children in the back seat.
Around 8:40 p.m. m. on Wednesday evening, November 30, Derek and his wife, Deanah Gotchie, were allegedly unloading belongings from the family’s car while it was parked next to a friend’s house in the 800 block of Russell Avenue North. Derek briefly got out of the car to lock the back door while Deanah was changing belongings when the suspected thief jumped out of the stolen van and entered the family car, according to police. Deanah recalled the incident, saying, “I turn around and go, ‘What?’ I look out the door and see our taillights go.” Derek recounted his search for KSTP, adding, “I didn’t know what to do. I’m jumping in there, I’m going after my kids.
The chase ended quickly and near Penn and Plymouth avenues, a few blocks away, Derek caught up with the suspect. He added that the suspect stopped to allow a car to pass, and the father jumped at the opportunity as soon as he got back on the road. “I just hit the back of my truck and pushed him into this alley to pin him against this fence,” Derek said. The truck came to a stop after slowly colliding with the car from behind, and the suspect got out and fled, leaving the children behind. No one was injured, but the rear bumper of the family’s van was damaged due to the incident.
