Dax Tejera, an ABC News producer died while intoxicated on December 23, 2022 outside a Bobby Van’s steakhouse in Manhattan. The ABC supervisors, who were the first to announce his death, assured that Tejera died of a heart attack.

Dax and his wife, VerĂ³nica Tejera, were enjoying the holidays living in the exclusive Yale Club, which is just a few steps from the steakhouse. It was reportedly discovered hours later that their two-year-old and five-month-old daughters had been left in their hotel room. Veronica, 33, was arrested on charges of endangering the well-being of her children. She called the police when club workers learned that the children had been left alone for many hours while the couple enjoyed their dinner. Dax apparently choked on food as a result of his poisoning, the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner reported to the Daily Mail on Wednesday, February 8.

Kim Godwin, president of ABC News, broke the initial news of Dax’s death, stating that he “died suddenly of a heart attack.” Dax’s death was officially attributed to “asphyxia due to airway obstruction by a food bolus complicating acute alcohol poisoning,” as reported by the Daily Mail. Veronica along with Dax went in the ambulance while her friends went to the Yale Club to pick up the children. The ABC news producer was taken to Bellevue Hospital after passing out, where he was ultimately pronounced dead.

Why was VerĂ³nica Tejera arrested?

On the night of the incident, Yale Club staff learned that the children had been unattended for at least two hours and notified police around 11 p.m. m. The NYPD arrested Veronica around 12:20 a.m. and charged her with two counts of “acting in a manner injurious to a child.” The children, who were not injured, were released to their grandmother.

Veronica was reportedly released from jail around 4 am. She has admitted that leaving her daughters alone was a “bad decision.” Authorities stated that the children were “left alone inside a hotel room for an extended period of time.” Veronica, a senior producer for The Washington Post, claimed that while the children were sleeping, she “had two cameras pointed” at them. She received a desk ticket requiring her to appear in court at a later date and was charged with two counts of “acting in a manner injurious to a child,” according to police.
