Authorities say a 14-year-old girl was shot in the back of the head after a homeowner allegedly opened fire after she was observed playing hide-and-seek in his backyard. According to a news release from the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office, the teen suffered non-life-threatening injuries. According to a news release from the agency, Louisiana homeowner David V. Doyle, 58, informed officials after the event on Sunday that he went inside his home to retrieve his pistol after noticing “shadows outside his home.”

According to the press release, an early inquiry into the incident revealed that numerous people were playing on Doyle’s land at the time of the occurrence. Doyle told detectives that he unintentionally hit the unidentified adolescent after he began shooting at the individuals as they fled the premises. After CPSO officers arrived on the scene and recognized the teen’s wound, she was sent to an out-of-town hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
While the event is still being investigated, Doyle has been detained and placed in the Calcasieu Correctional Centre on aggravated battery, illegal discharge of a firearm, and four charges of aggravated assault with a firearm. His bond is still pending. It is unknown whether Doyle has an attorney who can speak on his behalf.
