David “Red” Worrall, 59, of Clarksville, died at the hospital Tuesday, shortly after being rushed there following an apparent medical emergency at the Renaissance Academy polling station, WDRB reported. At the time of his death, Worrall was an At-Large candidate for city council. He posthumously placed third, the outlet said. Worrall, a Republican, previously served one term as Clarksville Ward 3 Councilman and then resigned to address health issues, according to PEOPLE. “I was approached by several groups of people who wanted me to try to get back involved,” the auto repair shop owner and Clarksville native said in his official candidate biography about the decision to re-enter local politics. The city of Clarksville issued a statement mourning his death. “It is with heavy hearts that we extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of David ‘Red’ Worrall, who passed away this afternoon,” city officials said Tuesday afternoon.

David’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him and the community he strove to serve.” According to his candidate page, Worrall had lived in Clarksville his entire life. Other local politicians shared his condolences on social media. “Yesterday is still blurry in my mind. As we worked on the survey with family and friends from both parties, we were reminded of how fragile life can be,” the elected Democratic member of the Council added in his profile. “Please pray for his mother, his brother and sister, his family and all of his close friends. He was a close and dear friend who I miss dearly!!! RIP Red!! At-Large Republican candidate Jennifer Voignier, who was re-elected Tuesday, wrote on Facebook. “Our community will not forget the good things that Red expressed [sic] about our community. His love for family, love for friends, and love and pride for the city we all call home.”
