David Francis, 63, a popular runner known as the ‘Litherland Running Man’ was named today as the victim of a fatal hit-and-run, and police are still looking for the driver.
David Francis died at the scene in Netherton, Merseyside, last Thursday evening after being hit by a stolen Audi S8 that subsequently crashed into a garden. Mr. Francis, popularly known as the “Forrest Gump of Bootle,” was notorious for racing across the Litherland district of Sefton in shorts, regardless of the weather. The driver of the automobile, which was taken during a prior theft, left the scene on foot and is believed to have been injured in the crash.
Mr. Francis was pronounced deceased at the scene by paramedics. Specialist officers are assisting his next of kin, according to Merseyside Police. The victim was named today by police, who claimed ‘extensive inquiries‘ was still underway to trace the driver of the vehicle after he failed to halt at the site.

‘I’m so sorry to hear this,’ Chris Starkey remarked. When I saw him, he always made me grin… the weather never stopped him from doing what he loved. ‘Our hearts go out to his family and friends.’

Hit-and-run victim died after being hit by a’stolen’ Audi while police search for the driver
‘This is truly a sad event in which an innocent member of the public has unfortunately been killed by a stolen automobile,’ Detective Chief Inspector Andy McCourt said last Friday. The driver of the automobile then fled on foot. Today, I’m pleading with that driver to do the right thing and turn themselves into authorities. ‘It’s only a matter of time before we track you down and arrest you. The man’s family and friends have been crushed by his death, and I am determined that justice will be served for them. ‘I would encourage anyone in the community who knows who that person is or has any information to come forward.’ Following the event, there was a police cordon in the vicinity, and property in Morgan Mews was sealed off, with a white tent visible in the back garden.
Neighbor statements
‘I’ve just woken up to all of this,’ said one woman who did not want to be identified. When I peeked out the window, I noticed an automobile in the neighbor’s garden. ‘I believe it went through the railings and into their wall. A blue tarpaulin has been placed over it. It’s terrifying.
We were in the garden with the kids until around 7 p.m. yesterday, and I’m simply glad we weren’t there when it happened. It breaks my heart.’ ‘I was watching television at 9 p.m. and I just saw the blue lights,’ said another neighbor. When I peered out the window, it was teeming with cops. He was probably only going out for a pint when he died.’ I did hear a tremendous noise last night but I didn’t think anything of it,’ said a homeowner on neighboring The Marian Way, where the police cordon was expanded. Then there were a lot of cops all down this route, and it was all roped off. They were knocking on doors to ask whether we had surveillance cameras. My spouse usually walks that route to the chippy, so it might have been anyone. It’s heartbreaking.’
Police investigation
According to a police spokeswoman, the automobile was stolen in the early hours of Thursday in the Harrison Drive area of Rainford, St Helens. The culprits are alleged to have arrived in Rainford in a grey Audi Q2 stolen earlier that day from the Caithness Drive area of Crosby, Sefton. Police recovered the Audi Q2 in Rainford. Police have asked anyone who has CCTV, dashcam, or doorbell footage from the collision or the two crimes to come forward.
