David Augustine Hodge Jr., 30, was charged Wednesday with four counts of engaging in sexual acts with a girl after the girl’s parents discovered the alleged abuse and reported it, NBC 6 reported. Police say Hodge, a science teacher and mentor to the chess club at the West Homestead K-8 Center, allegedly began grooming the girl, now 13, in October of last year. He and the girl began texting and Instagramming each other about school-related topics, but the conversations turned sexual in nature, police said.
The girl told detectives that she and Hodge eventually began exchanging nude photos. In November, Hodge allegedly asked the girl to start meeting him in a classroom on Friday afternoons after she finished chess club. He told the student to tell her parents she was staying late for tutoring, police said.

Teacher at West Homestead K-8 Center arrested, accused of romantic and sexual relationship with student
Hodge is accused of having sex with the girl twice and engaging in other sexual acts multiple times between November and last month. The girl told detectives that she believed Hodge was her boyfriend and that they had a romantic and sexual relationship together. The teacher allegedly confessed when he was questioned by the police. The school district said Hodge was immediately removed from campus when the girl’s parents reported the allegations and he is in the process of being fired.
Miami-Dade County Public Schools is deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations made against this individual,” a statement from the district said. As soon as the claims arose, the employee was immediately removed from the school setting. After a thorough investigation by the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department, this individual was subsequently arrested. He will not tolerate conduct like the one he is accused of. As such, the District has initiated employment termination procedures and will ensure that the individual cannot seek future employment with the District. Hodge is being held in the Miami-Dade County Jail after a judge denied bail Thursday.
