Darien Young, a man who escaped from a New Hampshire prison, has been identified as a gunman who took hostages and made threats at a Miami Beach Victoria’s Secret before a police officer shot and killed him.
Darien Young, 29, took a break from his transitional living unit at the minimum-security New Hampshire Department of Corrections in the early morning hours of July 21. Six days later, around 5:30 p.m. On Thursday, police were called to the lingerie chain’s location in Miami Beach, nearly 1,500 miles away, for a disturbance. Officers arrived and video showed them going door to door to evacuate various stores in the area. Eventually, they came across a man, now confirmed as Young, who was threatening two people in the store with a knife when an officer opened fire and shot him. “I could hear the shots. I heard the sound. I thought he was a little hypnotized,” Shanell Santiago, who works nearby, told NBC 6. ‘I was like, maybe it’s in my head right now. I had no music on. So it was clear as day.

“There were like four or five shots,” added Santiago. I know it’s something important. It could be a hostage situation. Young was pronounced dead later that night at a local hospital. He was initially jailed on charges of receiving stolen property, trespassing, falsifying evidence, and controlled drug prohibited acts. Young had been eligible for parole since July 31, ten days after he was laid off and three days after he was fatally shot. The last time Young would have been released from prison for his convictions was January 31, 2028. The shooting is being investigated as part of standard protocol, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The officer who shot Young was later identified as veteran officer Corey Jackson. Jackson was said to have been comforted by his fellow officers shortly after shooting, according to WSVN. The people threatened by the escaped inmate have not been identified.
