Daniel Williams, 22, a father of two, was near the end of his one-year sentence for second-degree robbery when he was found unconscious Oct. 22 at the Staton Correctional Center, two weeks before he died in a hospital. The Alabama Department of Corrections told AL.com. His family claim they were not told until October 25 that he was brain dead in hospital and that director Joseph Headley attributed it to drugs. “I talked to the principal and he told me it was obviously a drug overdose,” Williams’ stepmother, Taylor Bostic, told the Alabama Political Reporter. She and Williams’ father, Terry, “just assumed he had gotten his hands on some bad drugs or something,” she said. “And when we went to see him, he was beaten and bruised and you can see where his hands were tied. I mean, you can tell it’s obviously not a drug overdose,” she said. “And that’s when [dad Terry Williams] called the principal and asked him why the hell he told us that his son was dying from a drug overdose when it was obviously an assault,” his stepmother said. “And all he could say after that was that he was under investigation.”

Dies after being tied up, beaten and sexually assaulted for two days by prison gang
They eventually learned that he had been kidnapped and raped by another prisoner or “tied up, beaten and rented for two or three days,” the outlet reported, citing prison sources, who said that type of violence was not uncommon there. An online fundraiser also said that he “was beaten, tortured and sexually assaulted… by a gang of people when he was only 14 days away from his release.” The father of two was taken off life support on November 5 and he died four days later. Terry Williams and Bostic hired an attorney to hold someone accountable and prevent future attacks, according to the report. “We have to stop this,” the grieving father reportedly said. “If I can save a couple of lives. Know. I’m thankful.” The director did not respond to a request for comment from the outlet. Corrections officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment and it is unclear whether any inmates have been charged, beyond the fact that the case is under investigation. The deadly incident occurred as the Justice Department is suing Alabama for failing to prevent violence and abuse by prison guards in its state prisons. According to the Alabama Appleseed Center for Justice and Law, a federal trial is planned for next year.
