Daniel Erickson, 55, a middle school principal in upstate New York has been arrested after reportedly using Snapchat to entice a 16-year-old former pupil to meet him in a remote place. But when Mr. Erickson arrived at the meeting Friday with a box of condoms, chicken nuggets and a McDonald’s Grimace milkshake, he was confronted by Broome County sheriff’s deputies. The now-former Johnson City High School principal is charged with attempted third-degree rape, a misdemeanor, and luring a child, a felony. He is being held without bond in the Broome County Jail and has been relieved of his position as head of the middle school, which serves students in grades six through eight. But the parents say the school district should have acted sooner, alleging that other former students have made similar sexual harassment claims against Erickson.
Authorities say Erickson had been messaging the teen on Snapchat for at least a week before his arrest Friday. Throughout these conversations, Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar claims, Erickson made comments indicating that he “was going to engage in sexual conduct with the minor.” At first, authorities said, Erickson posed as a younger adult, but later decided to reveal his true identity to them. To do so, Erickson allegedly used “his position as principal of Johnson City High School and information from the school district’s database to convince the 16-year-old girl who he really was.” He is later told that he made multiple attempts to meet the girl, even showing up at her house at one point, but the girl never came out. Broome County deputies finally became aware of the situation on Wednesday, and just two days later, Erickson allegedly agreed to meet the student at a remote location with the intention of having sex.

The officers then decided to set up an undercover operation at the location and found Erickson with a box of condoms, chicken nuggets and a Grimace milkshake. As a parent, I know this is a nightmare for any parent,” Akshar told a news conference. “We trust our schools with the care and safety of our children, and for someone to violate that trust, abuse his power, and take advantage of a student in our school’s care is beyond disgusting.” Erickson, who has served in an administrative role with the Johnson City School District for more than 20 years, is now on leave. ‘Mister. Erickson is not permitted on district property nor is he permitted to use any district device or equipment,” Superintendent Eric Race said in a statement to Spectrum News.
Officials also noted that the meeting did not occur on school property and that Erickson had no prior incidents involving students. But a mother who spoke on condition of anonymity to 12 News said her daughter had previously been threatened with suspension after accusing Erickson of being a pervert and making her feel uncomfortable. Another parent claimed on the news channel’s Facebook page that Erickson had done “vile things to my kids,” while a former student said that when she was in the eighth grade, Erickson would ask her about her sex life. They don’t listen to you, they think you’re acting badly,” the mother told reporter Keith Jouganatos. “They don’t listen to what you say, they don’t take it seriously, and maybe if they had, we wouldn’t be in this situation.” When asked what he thought about the superintendent’s comments in which he said he was “shocked” by the news, the mother said, “He’s not shocked.” If he is, he’s an outright liar.
