Daniel Abed Khalife, 21, was awaiting trial at HMP Wandsworth after being accused of leaving fake bombs at a military base.
It is believed he escaped through the prison kitchen by tying himself to the bottom of a food delivery van. There are delays at UK airports as additional security checks take place. One working theory is that Khalife had been in the kitchen when he began his escape from HMP Wandsworth, a category B prison in south-west London, at around 07:50 BST. He is 6 feet 2 inches tall and was last seen wearing a prison chef’s uniform with a white T-shirt, red and white checkered pants and brown steel-toed boots, police said. Police believe Khalife poses a “low risk” to the public, but people are urged not to approach him and call 999. Khalife has links to the Kingston area of London and the north west, but the search has expanded across the country. Commander Dominic Murphy, head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, confirmed that all UK police forces and border points have been alerted. Airports and ports have been asked to implement additional security measures, causing delays across the UK, including at Heathrow airports, Manchester airports and the port of Dover.

Hunt for terror suspect ex-soldier Daniel Khalife after Wandsworth prison escape
Commander Murphy said counter-terrorism officers were being deployed across London, where the search is focussed. But he said Khalife “could be anywhere in the country at the moment and we are aware of the risk of him leaving the country.” Justice Secretary Alex Chalk made an “urgent call” to the prison governor and other senior prison service officials to “seek assurances about security at the prison”. Mr Khalife was remanded in custody awaiting trial in relation to terrorism and Official Secrets Act offences. He supposedly worked for a hostile state. In February, Westminster Magistrates’ Court heard he allegedly left fake devices at MOD Stafford “with the intention of inducing in another person the belief that the item was likely to explode or ignite”. A previous court appearance heard he “obtained” personal information about soldiers from the MoD’s Joint Personnel Management System that was “likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism” in 2021.
Khalife had been stationed at MOD Stafford, also known as Beacon Barracks, when he allegedly committed the offences. He disappeared from the base on January 2 after the alleged bomb hoax, a court previously heard, before being arrested weeks later on January 26. A prosecutor told Westminster Magistrates’ Court on January 28 that “active efforts had been made to search for him” and that he was “arrested in or near his car”. Following that court appearance, he was detained at HMP Belmarsh. He was not released on bail and it is currently unclear when he was transferred to HMP Wandsworth. Khalife appeared in court on January 28, February 17 and July 21, according to PA news agency archives. In July he was in Wandsworth prison and attended his court date that month by video link. He was remanded in custody awaiting trial due to begin on November 13 at Woolwich Crown Court. A Ministry of Defense spokesperson said: “As a result of his stay in custody on these charges, Daniel Khalife was discharged from the military on 22 May 2023.”
