Dalaneo Martin, 17, was shot and killed by a United States Park Police (USPP) officer on March 18 after he was found asleep inside an allegedly stolen vehicle near 34th Street and Baker Street NE. Body camera video shows a police officer entering the van’s back door, prompting the suspect to speed up and drive away with the officer still inside. After yelling at him to stop, the officer opens fire on the teenager. The US Department of Justice will investigate the death of a Washington DC teenager who was shot by a police officer sitting behind him in a car.“The loss of life is always tragic, but it is especially heartbreaking when it involves a child,” the justice department said in a news release Wednesday, announcing the civil rights investigation. He called the body cam video “extremely disturbing” and expressed his condolences to the teen’s family and friends.

Police body camera video shows fatal shooting of DC teen
Martin was shot by an unidentified officer of the US Park Police, the law enforcement arm of the National Park Service, during an investigation with the Washington DC Metropolitan Police. Footage released Tuesday shows police officers discussing how to arrest the suspect as he appears to doze in a car with the engine running. It was just before 09:00 on a Saturday. They talked about cutting a plastic film used as a temporary window and holding it down before he can leave. In the video, a Washington police officer can be heard advising Park Police: “Please don’t get trapped inside [the vehicle].”
Footage shows the teen driving away, leaving an officer in the back seat. “Stop, just let me out! Let me go!” the officer is heard yelling. “Stop. Stop or I’ll shoot!” he says seconds before firing several times. The car crashes into a house seconds later, and police are seen providing medical assistance to the teenager on the front lawn. Officers say a gun was recovered from the car. The president of the US Park Police Union has defended the officer. “There is a legal reason for him to be in the car, the use of force was justified, and the union stands behind the officers’ actions,” Kenneth Spencer told the Washington Post. The teen’s mother says she wants the officer who shot him fired and prosecuted. “This pain hurts so much,” Terra Martin told reporters on Wednesday.
