Craig Chamberlin, a retired deputy for the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office who served for decades, died on April 30, 2023, at the age of 52. Chamberlin was 52 years old and the father of three girls. Chamberlin worked for the sheriff’s office for 22 years and became well-known in the community through television and radio appearances.
The cause of death for Chamberlin has not been disclosed. His death was unexpected, according to his family. “It was unforeseeable, and as a family, we are still in shock,” his daughters wrote. “He was known and loved by many people, and this is as devastating and shocking to you all as it is to us.” Thank you for all of your love and support; we appreciate it.”
Chamberlin launched his candidature for sheriff in February 2022 but was sacked the following week by former Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich. Chamberlin denied lying during an internal probe, according to Knezovich. Chamberlin eventually dropped out of the race in April 2022. Because of his choice to resign, former sheriff’s office workers Wade Nelson and Michael Zollars ran for the job last year.

Former voice of Spokane County Sheriff’s Office dies
For his larger-than-life personality and swagger, the former deputy earned several nicknames, including “Chambo,” “Deputy Craig,” and even “Hollywood,” according to KXLY reporter Jeff Humphrey, who worked on the crime beat with Chamberlin for about a decade. “When he showed up, I just saw relief on people’s faces,” Humphrey recalled of Chamberlin. “I’d stroll around with him and people would recognize him. He was a media sensation.”
He was regarded by Humphrey as a “pioneer of outreach” and a “problem solver.” Chamberlin worked as a patrol deputy and a school resource officer in addition to his duties as a sheriff’s office spokesman. “This is the guy you wanted your son or daughter to be able to go to,” Humphrey explained. “Craig was genuinely concerned about the community. He leaped at the chance to use the news to defend people from crime. He was simply exceptional.”
According to his resume, Chamberlin grew up in Spokane Valley and graduated from University High in 1988 before getting a football scholarship to play at the University of Puget Sound, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics. He began his law enforcement career as a constable with the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office, where he worked for three years before returning to Spokane. After leaving the sheriff’s office, Chamberlin worked as a marketer and spokesperson for SERVPRO of Spokane Valley, which provides cleanup and repair for fire, water, and mold damage. Chamberlin’s family has set up a GoFundMe page to assist with his funeral expenses.
