Investigation Report
A local who called triple zero described hearing two loud explosions and then, when they went to investigate, they found the remains of the accident and two children who had left it “withering” on the side of the road. Investigators will examine whether alcohol, drugs or speed were factors in the crash or if the driver, who has not yet been interviewed, simply missed a curve just before where the tree was located. The tree was previously the site of another fatal accident in 2003 and locals said speed bumps should be built before the hairpin bend. “It was a chaotic scene… it appears two of the occupants had been ejected from the vehicle,” Northern Beaches Police Commander Superintendent Patrick Sharkey said. Superintendent Sharkey said the children suffered “serious” crush injuries, including leg fractures and other associated injuries. “They were all young men from the Northern Beaches,” he said. “The scene is still under investigation and has just been cleared, so it’s very early. Superintendent Sharkey said there were restrictions on five people in the car. “There is a sixth person in the vehicle, so the position of those people, if they were in the cabin, will be the subject of investigation,” he said. “It rained last night and the roads may have been wet.”
