Christo Mathew, 23, has been revealed as the victim of a horrific drowning near the popular tourist destination earlier this month. Mathew, an Indian student at the University of Queensland, was swimming at Frenchman’s Beach around 2:40 p.m. on October 1 when he began having difficulties in the water. Two witnesses swam in an attempt to rescue Mr Mathew, but were unsuccessful. Surf Life Saving Queensland volunteers brought the three swimmers back to shore, although Mathew was already unconscious and face down in the water.

Cause of Death
CPR was performed on Mr Mathew and he was airlifted to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a critical condition, while one of the other swimmers was flown to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in a stable condition. On Tuesday, a statement issued by Brisbane’s Mar Thoma Church revealed that Mathew died in hospital on October 8. His father and his uncle were at his side when they disconnected him from life support around 4:20 p.m. The organization is now raising funds to repatriate the 23-year-old’s remains to his home country. The church has since organized a GoFundMe for Mr. Mathew’s family to return his body home. “In this difficult time, we need to support Christo Mathew’s family, and this is what prompted us to organize this fundraiser to cover the repatriation costs to bring his mortal remains to Kerala, where he will rest in the family grave. ”said the church. “Any donation, no matter how small or large, will be greatly appreciated and the funds raised will be used solely for repatriation.
