Suspect charged with causing death by dangerous driving

Christine Sandford, 40, of Windsor Gardens in the northeast of the city, was killed. Simon Bittner saw what happened and said passing drivers tried to help her, but it was too late. “It looked like the car had hit her head on and the way she turned I couldn’t see the other side where most of the damage was from her,” she said. “There was a nurse a couple of cars back, she came out herself and volunteered.”

The driver, from Ottoway, Port Adelaide, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving with police investigating how fast he was going. He was granted bail to appear before Adelaide Magistrates Court on 31 May. SA Deputy Police Commissioner Ian Parrott said it was not unusual for that to happen.

“While it would be difficult for the family in particular to understand, it is not an unusual circumstance for this person to be granted bail,” he said. Three people have died on the roads of South Australia in just two days. A total of 35 people have died in less than three months. Parrott called the death toll “absolutely insane”.
