Cheryl Henderson, of Palm Coast, was involved in a collision with a pickup truck on Belle Terre Parkway Saturday afternoon, according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office. The driver of the Ford pickup truck had blocked Henderson’s path with her vehicle to prevent her from leaving it, and then got out of it and moved into her path, telling her not to leave it, according to ClickOrlando. The septuagenarian, however, managed to maneuver her SUV around the truck, causing the driver to jump on the hood, deputies said. Witnesses reported seeing the elderly woman run south, with the man grabbing the front of her SUV to save her life, as seen in heart-stopping surveillance video released by the sheriff’s office. Henderson drove approximately 2 miles at speeds reaching 50 mph with the human hood ornament on her before a good Samaritan forced her off the road, according to sheriff’s officials.

Describing the scene as “unbelievable”, the good Samaritan, who asked not to be identified, told the local station that he decided to take action after seeing the man’s feet dangling just inches off the ground in the middle of a busy street. The concerned citizen drove in front of Henderson and gradually slowed her down, forcing her to stop. The good Samaritan said the first thing the driver of the Ford said to him after getting off the hood was, “I didn’t know how much longer I could last.” When officers arrived on the scene and handcuffed Henderson, she tried to fight her off, arguing that the other driver was at fault because she jumped on her hood. During an interview with investigators, the woman stated that she did not stop because she had run out of gas and was running to the nearest pump. She also alleged that she had tried to stop but she was unable to do so, according to reports. Henderson was charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. She was released from jail Sunday night after posting $20,000 bail. The victim who clung to the hood was not seriously injured, Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly said.
