Charlie Hedges, 29, has been charged in the death of a newborn baby who died at just two weeks old. Police and emergency services rushed onto a road in Chatham, Kent, just after 6 am yesterday morning before making the tragic discovery. Paramedics desperately fought to save the little girl, but she was pronounced dead at 6:47 a.m. It is understood that she was unresponsive when she was found at a property in Albert Road, Chatham, and she may have passed away hours earlier.

A woman, the baby’s mother, was arrested shortly after the baby was pronounced dead.Charlie Hedges, 29, was charged with causing or enabling the death of a child on July 11 and appeared at Medway Magistrates Court today. James Nichols, the prosecutor, told District Judge William Nelson the case needed to be sent to crown court for trial. Hedges, of Albert Road, Chatham, made no plea in connection with the charge when he appeared in the dock. Nichols said: “This is a deeply tragic case.” Judge Nelson granted Hedges bail, but Nichols immediately appealed that decision. The 29-year-old was taken into custody pending a bond hearing at Maidstone Crown Court. The case has been sent to crown court and the bond hearing will be heard within the next 48 hours.
