Charles Goucher, a great-grandfather suddenly “flashed” and attacked his son-in-law with a bread knife after throwing lye at him that was initially mistaken for tea. Charge of attempted murder of his son-in-law
She dropped a charge of attempted murder of his son-in-law. Prosecutor Charlotte Baines said police received a 999 call from Goucher’s daughter saying her stepfather was “lost” after she arrived at her home. Mrs Baines said: “She said there was blood everywhere.” Goucher was said to have yelled, “You have robbed me. You have conned me.” However, there was no evidence that they had, in fact, done anything wrong, and quite the opposite. The woman believed that Goucher was going to kill her and her husband, but the couple managed to snap out of it. The son-in-law tried to stop Goucher from leaving, but the pensioner managed to kick out the door as the police arrived. They found him by the front door.
Ms Baines said: “His face was covered in blood.” Goucher had a large piece of wood with him and was told to leave it. He also took the knife from his waist and put it down. The retiree was taken to the hospital, accompanied by police officers. His family was treated at Hull Royal Infirmary. The son-in-law had a lacerated wrist and bruises and his skin was red from the bleach, while his wife had bruises and wounds on her arm. Ms Baines said: “Fortunately the injuries were not as serious as they could have been.” The son-in-law later said that he thought Goucher was going to kill him and that he was “lost.” He had known Goucher for more than 45 years.
