Carolyn Bryant Donham Wiki – Carolyn Bryant Donham Biography

Carolyn Bryant Donham, a white woman from Mississippi whose accusation against a black boy named Emmett Till in 1955 resulted in his death, has died. Carolyn Bryant Donham’s death at the age of 88 brings an end to one of the most infamous lynchings in American history.

Prosecutors sought charges against her for Till’s death until a year before her death. Last year, they were unable to persuade a grand jury that she should be tried for kidnapping and manslaughter. The Emmett Till & Mamie Till-Mobley Institute issued a statement saying that they “wish mercy on her soul, even as we regret that she never took responsibility for her role” in Till’s murder.

“While the world saw the horrors of racism in Emmett’s murder, the real consequences of hatred, what the world will never see now is remorse or responsibility for his death.” The Chicago boy was visiting family when he entered the business where Donham, then 21, worked in Money, Mississippi. Donham accused him of pestering her and making inappropriate approaches while she was alone in the business. Her husband and brother-in-law kidnapped the boy, tortured him, and dumped his damaged body in a river.

A white woman whose claim caused Emmett Till’s murder has died

Till’s mother, Mamie Till Mobley, insisted on an open coffin at his funeral so that everyone might see what had happened to him. The nation was appalled when photographs of his brutalized remains were made public. The two kidnappers, Roy Bryant and JW Milam were captured but soon acquitted by an all-white jury. They eventually acknowledged the murder in a magazine article, but under US law, they could not be tried again. Both are no longer alive. A coroner confirmed Donham’s death on Thursday in the small hamlet of Westlake, Louisiana.

Rev Wheeler Park Jr, Till’s cousin and the last remaining witness to his kidnapping, stated “Our hearts go out” to her family, adding, “I recognize that any loss of life is tragic and have no ill will or animosity towards her.” “Even though no one will now be held accountable for the death of my cousin and best friend, it is up to all of us to be accountable for the challenges we still face in overcoming racial injustice.”Donham testified during her husband’s and his half-brother’s trial that Till had grabbed her hand and propositioned her. In a 2008 interview with a Yale historian, she denied the assertion, saying, “That part’s not true.”

The admission prompted the Department of Justice to re-examine her case, but when investigators confronted her, she denied lying throughout the trial. Donham was never arrested for the circumstances that led to the lynching. However, in June 2022, a group of people searching the basement of the local county courthouse discovered an unsealed arrest warrant charging Bryant, Milam, and Donham with Till’s kidnapping.

Even though the order was made public at the time, the sheriff stated to reporters that he did not want to “bother” a woman with two young children at home. Donham wrote in an unpublished memoir obtained by the Associated Press that she had no idea what would happen to Till when she submitted her claim.
