A father of three died from his injuries after being trapped in an indoor adventure cave for more than four hours.
Carl O’Keeffe, 49, of Lancaster, was rescued on Saturday 22 April from the Kong Adventure near Keswick, Cumbria, after slipping and becoming trapped inside one of the caverns. Staff at the rescue centre were unable to extract him, so emergency services were summoned shortly after 3 p.m. The situation was attended by Cumbria Fire and Rescue, police, Keswick Mountain Rescue, Cumbria Ore Mines Rescue Unit, Great North Air Ambulance, and the Northwest Ambulance Service’s Hazardous Area Response Team.
Mr O’Keeffe had entered the indoor cave at the Lake District adventure centre with his niece during a birthday party. After becoming imprisoned, he was recovered more than four hours later and transported to Carlisle Hospital’s intensive care unit with crush injuries. However, his family confirmed that he died at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 30.

According to his sister, Olivia Short, Mr O’Keeffe’s injuries “were severe and he would not be able to survive” immediately after he was rushed to the hospital.
