The body of rugby league star Bryn Hargreaves has been found more than a year after he went missing in the United States.

The 37-year-old former St Helens player was reported missing after he failed to show up for work last January, sparking a huge police manhunt in West Virginia. His brother Gareth wrote on Facebook yesterday: ‘RIP Bryn Hargreaves. It is with incredible sadness that I can confirm that after 14 months we finally found Bryn. We still don’t know the cause of death or what really happened on 1/3/22. Thanks to all who have helped in the search. His mother, Maria Andrews, also wrote on social media: ‘It’s not something I wanted to share. I’m into bits # and heartbroken. My beautiful son Bryn. I can’t think of any words to describe the pain xx.

The last time the family spoke to Bryn’

Bryn’s family last spoke to him on Facetime on January 3, 2021. A spokesperson for the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office said at the time of his disappearance that Bryn had been reported missing on January 16. When officers arrived, they found his door unlocked, his shower still running, and all his belongings, including his phone and his Apple laptop, raising fears he had been kidnapped. Tracking dogs were deployed to the Cheat Lake area of Morgantown, but to no avail. His brother Gareth said at the time: “It’s almost like he’s been kidnapped in the shower.” It’s definitely a fear of mine. Obviously, he had mental health issues and severe back pain from a car accident in December. “I think the police thought he did something to himself and that’s certainly a possibility that we fear as well.” But five months later, indeed a body would have turned up. ‘It’s a bit strange if you wanted to disappear to leave your apartment unlocked with all your identification and some of your most prized possessions. It’s one of the reasons I can’t stop this. If he’s had a crap moment and had enough to walk away, that’s fair enough. But if something happened and we didn’t try to help him or find him, he could never forgive me.”

Police Investigation

Investigators launched a manhunt, which turned up no definitive leads. His family opened a GoFundMe page to raise £20,000 to pay for a private investigator, however, all searches came up blank. Her mother and his brother flew to the US on January 28 for seven weeks to search for Bryn. Wigan’s Bryn made 175 appearances in the sport’s top flight, the Super League, for Wigan Warriors, St Helens, and Bradford Bulls. He retired from rugby at just 26 after becoming disillusioned with the game and later moved to the US.

But he had claimed that the police would not give permission for the search, and although the family had the money for a private investigation, this prevented them from going ahead. Gareth previously said: ‘The private investigator said he couldn’t find any concrete evidence of anything. But he believed that Bryn was in a bad mental state, and he had more evidence to back that up. He believed it was more likely that he had committed suicide, which we knew was a strong possibility. He wanted to search the lake again because he believed the initial search had some vulnerabilities. But the police would not concede. Gareth said that he had personally “struggled” with not getting answers about the whereabouts of his brother after he suddenly disappeared. And he had claimed that there were lines of inquiry that the police should have followed shortly after his disappearance. He said: ‘he has never accessed his phone, they have been unable to. To be honest, they never checked the security cameras, which was a bit frustrating.

Unfortunately, no one could give the date or location where he was last seen or what he was wearing, which police say hampered their attempts to find him. After news of Bryn’s death was shared on social media, other friends and family members paid tribute to the ‘kind’ and ‘kind’ sportsman.

The cause of death has not yet been determined.
