Memories

Keith, Bruce’s brother, recalled: “When Bruce and I shared a bedroom at Earn Crescent, I recall clearly hearing a tonne of amazing music being played on his Dansette record player. I have extremely strong memories of Bruce performing songs by Stevie Wonder, especially the tune Golden Lady, which is still one of my favorites. Although Bruce continued to do well in technical drawing, he quit school halfway through his sixth year to join the Merchant Sea. He was selected as a cadet for officer training but later decided against it and got a job making lemonade.

Bruce has wanted a guitar since he was a young child. He appeared to be born with a musical gene, but he would have to wait until he was 14 to realize his goal. Since then, he has been teaching himself to play music “every waking minute.” He immediately transitioned from bass guitar to acoustic guitar. In his teen years, he played in a few bands, including Souled and Heeled, The Living Memory, and Blues Junction.

Bass is everything

He took on a few jobs after leaving the lemonade business, including one at a jute mill. As long as he had time to practice his bass, he had no fear of hard effort. Later on, he studied electronics at Dundee, and then he began working for Marconi in Inverkeithing.

Bruce joined Exhibition at the start of the 1970s, followed by Stan and de Liver. Later that decade, he received an invitation to join Tivvy, with whom he participated in the television program Opportunity Knocks.

Final good-bye

On February 16, Bruce passed away at Ninewells Hospital.

Bruce used to say that there are only two types of music: good music and awful music, Anne continued. Bruce, however, came in only one variety: the one who is already terribly missed and who left a significant hole in our lives.
