Bronny James, son of NBA star LeBron James, went into cardiac arrest during basketball practice at the University of Southern California and was hospitalized Monday, according to a statement from a family spokesman. He is out of the intensive care unit and in stable condition, according to the statement. “Yesterday while practicing, Bronny James went into cardiac arrest. Medical staff were able to treat Bronny and take him to the hospital. He is now in stable condition and is no longer in the ICU,” the statement said. “We ask for respect and privacy for the James family and will update the media when there is more information. “LeBron and Savannah would like to publicly send their deepest thanks and appreciation to the USC athletic and medical staff for their incredible work and dedication to the safety of their athletes.”
Bronny, 18, is a freshman making the USC basketball team after graduating from Sierra Canyon High School in Los Angeles this spring. The 6-foot-3 combo guard was rated a four-star recruit and shone at the McDonald’s All-American Game in March with some of the best high school basketball players in the country. He averaged 14.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.7 steals as a senior, joining a USC team looking to make the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight time. “So damn proud of you kid!” his father wrote on Instagram after Bronny committed to attending USC. “I have no words besides I LOVE YOU!!!” James, 38, will enter his 21st NBA season and his sixth season with the Los Angeles Lakers. The four-time NBA champion and four-time MVP has said that one of his ultimate goals is to play in the NBA with his son. Bronny James suffers a cardiac arrest while playing for USC
Cardiac arrest occurs when electrical disturbances cause the heart to suddenly stop beating. It can be fatal if not treated right away, but it can be reversed with CPR and shocks from a defibrillator, according to the American Heart Association. More than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of a hospital in the US each year, the association said. USC medical staff have recent experience with such an incident. Last July, USC freshman forward Vince Iwuchukwu went into cardiac arrest during summer training. In a video posted to Twitter earlier this year, Iwuchukwu said he felt dizzy during a practice break and then collapsed. Track and field trainers, including Jon Yonamine, Erin Tillman and Lauren Crawford, performed CPR on him and brought him back to life, USC said. Iwuchukwu bounced back and finally made his basketball debut in January, more than six months later. Head coach Andy Enfield praised the coaching staff in January. “They really do an incredible job, not only keeping our players healthy, but when something happens, they get therapy, and when something serious happens like Vince did, they are ready to respond immediately.” Last year, Damar Hamlin of the NFL’s Buffalo Bills went into cardiac arrest in the middle of a “Monday Night Football” game and she was hospitalized for more than a week. “Let’s also pray to the Bronny and James family,” Hamlin wrote on Twitter Tuesday. “Here for you, just as you have been for me throughout my process.”
