Brian Haney Off-Duty Deputy Killed in Car Accident in Lake Elsinore
SkyFOX flew over the scene in Riverside County as the officer’s body was transferred to a hearse as fellow first responders greeted them. Orange County officials identified the officer as Deputy Brian Haney, who was working in the San Juan Capistrano area and was on his way to his home when the accident occurred.

“Today, Orange County Deputy Brian Haney tragically lost his life on his way home from a shift to keep the families of San Juan Capistrano safe. I am grateful for his service and my heart goes out to the Deputy’s loved ones. Haney, his young family needs the strong support of our community during their grief,” Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley said in a statement.
San Juan Capistrano Mayor Howard Hart wrote online that he was “shocked and deeply saddened” by Haney’s death.
“I am especially devastated to learn that he is leaving behind a loving wife and newborn baby that he was returning home to after protecting and serving our community when this terrible accident occurred,” Hart wrote. “I know my San Juan Capistrano neighbors will join me in prayers of comfort and support for the family and loved ones of Deputy Haney.”
The circumstances leading up to the accident are under investigation.
