Bre’asia Powell, a 16-year-old girl has been shot dead and a boy of the same age has been wounded after a dispute broke out at a graduation party at an Atlanta school.
Police said they were dealing with the incident which broke out near Benjamin E Mays High School in southwest Atlanta after a confrontation at around 2.30 am on Sunday morning. Bre’asia Powell was found at the scene and rushed to hospital where she was later pronounced dead. A 16-year-old boy, who was not identified, was transported by ambulance to hospital. His condition is reportedly stable. Atlanta police confirmed they are investigating the shooting which is understood to have broken out amid a confrontation at an unauthorized graduation party in the school’s parking lot.
Officers initially received reports of a person shot outside the school in the early hours of Sunday morning. The incident is believed to have arisen from a confrontation at the school graduation party earlier in the evening. Officers arrived to find a 16-year-old girl shot before she was rushed to hospital where she later died. Bre’asia Powell was confirmed as the victim by the Fulton County Medical Examiner. Sometime later, a 16-year-old boy then checked himself into a hospital with a gunshot wound. He has not been identified by the police.

Police did not confirm whether there were any other victims or if any suspects had been taken into custody. Officers also did not confirm the number of people who were at the unauthorized party. Atlanta Public Schools subsequently released a statement following the incident: ‘According to Atlanta Police, two teenagers were shot during an unauthorized gathering at the end of the existing driveway at Benjamin E. Mays High School, early Sunday morning. ‘One is deceased and one is being treated at a local hospital. ‘The gathering occurred after a graduation party at another location in the community was broken up by Atlanta Police a couple of hours earlier. A friend of the victim’s family told Fox5: ‘There were no prior altercations that led to this shooting. There was nothing that Bre’Asia did to cause this, to bring this about, to incite this. This was an unfortunate tragedy that has shaken a family and friends circle to its core.’ Atlanta’s mayor Andre Dickens, Atlanta Police, the Atlanta Public Schools superintendent, and the school police department held a press conference on Sunday to provide details on the incident.
Dickens, who is an alumni of the high school where the shooting took place, said he had spoken with Ms. Powell’s and the unidentified 16-year-old’s mothers. He told the press conference that teenagers needed to make better decisions like going home at a certain time of night and the need for parents to be involved in their children’s lives. The mayor also said Ms. Powell was due to start working for the City this week as part of its youth employment program. Police said that it is still unknown who fired the shots and the exact details that led up to the shooting as the investigation remains ongoing.
